Unkempt, rough and tough looking members of the gang, or lynch mob, or vigilantes, or posse riders, or cow herders. They had minimal or no dialog, not much screen time, and were generally not listed in the film credits. Some would show up as a face in the crowd, portraying townspeople, barflies, deputies, wagon drivers, ranch hands, etc. We tend to recognize some of their faces, but have no clue as to their real names.

Family members are looking for info on Hobart Lindsay "Tex" Parker ... and many thanks for sharing their photos and information. Parker passed away on September 23, 1952 at The Motion Picture Home and Hospital in California. Family records indicate that he was born in Stoneburg, Texas on October 19, 1902. In records below, there are mentions of his birth location as Texas and Oklahoma.

Several of us had spotted Parker in crowd scenes, as a saloon barfly ... and occasionally doing a role with a line or two of dialog. But we couldn't pin a name to the face ... until Tex's family got in touch. Recent spottings:

David Knapton found Parker in uncredited bit/support roles in SOUTH OF ST. LOUIS (Warners, 1949) with Joel McCrea and THE PLUNDERERS (Republic, 1948) with Rod Cameron and Forrest Tucker.

Fabian Cepeda identified Parker's appearances in:
SARATOGA TRUNK (Warners, 1945) and DALLAS (Warners, 1950), both with Gary Cooper
STAGECOACH BUCKAROO (Universal, 1942) with Johnny Mack Brown.

Ye Old Corral webmeister has spotted Parker in:
TWO GUN SHERIFF (Republic, 1941) which starred Don Barry.
LUCKY CISCO KID (20th Century Fox, 1940) which starred Cesar Romero.
Hopalong Cassidy adventures PIRATES ON HORSEBACK (Paramount, 1941) and FORTY THIEVES (United Artists, 1944).
THE OLD TEXAS TRAIL (Universal, 1944) with Rod Cameron and Eddie Dew.
the Lum and Abner PARTNERS IN TIME (RKO, 1946).
and he's a cavalry trooper at around 1 hour 20 minutes into the Errol Flynn THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON (Warners, 1941).

Parker may have the uncredited role as a square dance caller in the Ann Sothern GOLD RUSH MAISIE (MGM, 1940). If anyone has that Maisie film, please take a look and see if you can confirm.

Rick Albright did some checking of the census:

• I did not find him in 1910 when he should have been in his parental home and 8 years old, but I did find him in 1920 and 1930, and in a brief genealogy posted online at ancestry.com. His birth state remains less than certain. In 1920 his parents told the census taker Hobart was born in Texas, but in 1930 he said he was born in Oklahoma (reflecting the info in his death record). But if his wife was the one questioned in 1930 and at the time of his death, she may have been wrong. The 1930 census shows Hobart's parents as born "U.S." rather than the actual state, something he should have known but his wife may not have known. Here's what I found:
• Hobart Parker was born in Stoneburg, Montague Co., TX, a son of Thomas Alfred Parker (1868-1929) and Mary Florence Dossey (1874-1947). He married Helen Kersey (1910-2002) about 1925. No children named. He was buried at Pierce Bros. Valhalla Memorial Park, 10621 Victory Blvd., Hollywood, CA. This is from the genealogy posting.
• 1920 census for Red River, Tillman Co., OK: Hobart Parker, born about 1903 in TX, age 17, son of Tom A. Parker, born AL, and Florence Parker, born TX. Hobart is listed as a farm laborer.
• 1930 census for Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA: Hobart Parker is living at 324 W. 54th St., L.A., renting at $35 per month. His age is given as 25, married at age 20, born OK, parents born U.S., occupation: welder at a steel mill. Wife Helen Parker is age 20, married at 16, born NE, works as drug clerk. Hobart's mother-in-law, Rose Kersey, age 52, widow, born NE, is living with them. She is listed as a seamstress, parents born England.

Ye Old Corral webmeister was hoping to locate more on Tex when the 1940 census was released. Alas - nothing found. Below is info from his 1925 marriage license on Family Search (free), several city directories on Ancestry.com (subscription), and his death certificate. Appears he was married twice - his first wife was Helen and second was named Zola:

• August 15, 1925 marriage license of 22 year old Hobart L. Parker (born Oklahoma) to 18 year old Helen E. Kersey (born Nebraska) in Anaheim, California. Hobart's occupation is "shipping clerk" and he lists his parents as Tom Parker (born Dallas, Texas) and Florence Dorsey (born Lawton, Oklahoma): https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1971-29896-16159-79?cc=1804002
• Ancestry.com had several California city directories with Parker (and a different wife):
  1939: Hobart L. Parker (occupation studiowkr; meaning studio worker) and wife Zola V. Parker live at 11728 Vose St., North Hollywood
  1944: Hobart L. Parker (occupation actor) and wife Zola V. Parker still reside at 11728 Vose St., North Hollywood
• Death certificate - 49 year old Hobart Lindsay Parker was born October 19, 1902 in Oklahoma to Thomas A. Parker and Florence Dorsey [sic]. (An error there - his mother's maiden was Dossey, not Dorsey.) Occupation was "Movie Extra" and he was divorced. He passed away September 23, 1952 at the Motion Picture Hospital, Woodland Hills, California. Cause of death was bleeding escophageal varices (two weeks duration) and Laennec's cirrhosis (two years duration). His sister Cleo Robertson was the death certificate informant. Burial at Valhalla Memorial Park.
• The California Death Index has a record for Hobart Lindsay Parker, born 10/19/1902 in Oklahoma, Mother's maiden name of Dorsey [sic], and he passed away on 9/23/1952 in the Los Angeles area.

In addition to the photos at the top of this webpage, Tex's family sent scans of signatures from the visitation/remembrance book from his funeral. There were several familiar names who attended - Cactus Mack McPeters, Buck Bucko, Dick Dickinson, Joe Phillips, Jim Mason, George Pleus, and Bud Rae.
