Steel was from horse trainer and stable owner Clarence "Fat" Jones. The horse had a unique face blaze and three white socks, and was ridden in the late 1940s and 1950s by Joel McCrea, Randolph Scott, Clark Gable, John Wayne, many others.

Ben Johnson rode Steel in WAGONMASTER and in his escape from the Indian war party across Monument Valley in RIO GRANDE.

In B westerns, Steel was ridden by RKO cowboys Tim Holt, Robert Mitchum and James Warren.
