Carole Landis

Real name: Frances Lillian Mary Ridste

1919 - 1948

A lovely and talented actress, and particularly adept at comedic roles, Carole Landis came to Hollywood in the 1930s.

Some of her more remembered roles are as the heroine in the serial DAREDEVILS OF THE RED CIRCLE (Republic, 1939); as the murdered blonde in the Betty Grable / Victor Mature I WAKE UP SCREAMING (20th Century Fox, 1941); as a gossipy band wife in the Glenn Miller film, ORCHESTRA WIVES (20th Century Fox, 1942); and as one of the prehistoric folks in ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. (Hal Roach, 1940).

Landis was one of the many Hollywood performers who did extensive USO work and performances during WW2, and Landis' USO co-stars were Kay Francis, Martha Raye and Mitzi Mayfair.  Their USO experiences were the basis for the film, FOUR JILLS IN A JEEP (20th Century Fox, 1944) ... and the basis for that film was Carole's book Four Jills In A Jeep, The Rolliking Adventures Of Four Hollywood Stars Who Entertained The Troops In Bermuda, England, & Africa.

Her career faded after the war and a failed love affair was supposedly the cause of her suicide in 1948.

Above from left to right are Wayne, Carole Landis, Billy Curtis, stuntman Jimmy Fawcette, Collette Lyons, Ray Corrigan and stuntman Dave Sharpe behind Corrigan in a still from the Three Mesquiteers film THREE TEXAS STEERS (Republic, 1939). Unknown who temporarily resides in the gorilla costume in this still - but it was Corrigan who played the ape role in the film.
