A pause in the action on the Bob Steele western SMOKY TRAILS (Metropolitan, 1939). Above are:
1. James Aubrey
2. producer/director Harry S. Webb
3. Eddie Saeta
4. Bob Steele
5. producer/director Bernard B. Ray (he directed SMOKY TRAILS)
6. Rose Gordon, wife of Harry S. Webb
7. Gordon Webb (first son of Harry and Rose)
8. Sammy Gordon.
The leading lady (center) is Jean Carmen.

Above is the cover of the pressbook for Bob Steele's SMOKY TRAILS (Metropolitan, 1939), one of eight films that Bob starred in for Harry S. Webb's Metropolitan Pictures company in 1939-1940. That's Steele mixing it up with Bob Terry at the top. Frank Larue is wearing the badge in the lower left. And Ted Adams and George Chesebro are beatin' up on Steele in the bottom right. The heroine is incorrectly listed as Joan Carmen - she's Jean Carmen and is best remembered as the rider of the paint horse in Republic's 1937 serial THE PAINTED STALLION.

Above from L-to-R are Carleton Young (hand on door handle) followed by Ted Adams and behind him is Robert Walker in a lobby card from THE PAL FROM TEXAS (Metropolitan, 1939). On the right side of the door are Steele and Betty Mack.  Steele made a series of 8 oaters which were released during 1939-1940 for Metropolitan Pictures company, which was run/owned by Harry S. Webb.  Harry's brother Ira Webb directed a pair of the Steele Metropolitans.  After the Metropolitan group, Steele went to work at PRC in the 'Billy the Kid' series, and soon after, became 'Tucson Smith' in the Three Mesquiteers films for Republic Pictures.

Above is the title lobby card from this 1940 Jack Randall film.  Randall was the younger brother of western film hero Bob Livingston.  After shutting down Metropolitan Pictures, Webb moved to Monogram Pictures and assumed control over the Jack Randall westerns from producer Maurice Conn.  Bernard B. Ray went to Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC).

An interesting twist of fate is shared by Randall and the Webbs --- Jack would close out his starring career at Monogram under the auspices of Harry.  After WW2 duty, Randall was trying to revive his career and was working at Universal on a serial called THE ROYAL MOUNTED RIDES AGAIN (1945).  It was during the making of this cliffhanger that Randall was killed during a horse riding mishap.  Ira Webb was at Universal during the first half of the 1940s, and he was part of the production team at work on that chapterplay.

(From Old Corral collection)

Ira Webb was still working in various capacities at the tail end of the B western era, including the Lash LaRue yarns for Ron Ormond's Western Adventures production unit. While at Universal in the first half of the 1940s, Ira was nominated several times for an Oscar in Interior Design/Decoration (for ARABIAN NIGHTS (1942) and IMPACT (1944)). He (and Alexander Golitzen, John B. Goodman and Russell A. Gausman) won the 1943 Oscar for Interior Decoration (color) for PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. The Webb/Gordon Hollywood Connection Continues ...

The youngest son of Harry Webb and Rose Gordon is Gordon Webb and he's shown as a child in the Bob Steele photo above.  Gordon grew up and became an important figure in films and TV --- he had various jobs as producer, co-producer, director, production manager, et al, and his credits include SIX DAYS, SEVEN NIGHTS (1998), GHOSTBUSTERS II (1989), TWINS (1988), more, as well as TV work on WILD, WILD WEST, PERRY MASON, more.

The second son of Rose and Harry is Robert M. 'Bob' Webb.  Bob joined the Screen Directors Guild of America in 1959 (a few years later, it was changed to Directors Guild to include live television).  His first film was for Gene Corman, a $86,000 dollar budget shot entirely in San Juan, Puerto Rico and titled SECRET OF THE PURPLE REEF.  Bill Witney, of Republic cliffhanger fame, was the director and Peter 'Columbo' Falk played a second lead.  Bob then went to Columbia as a staff Assistant Director where he worked on TV programs such as THE DONNA REED SHOW and FATHER KNOWS BEST (which were shot on the same sound stages that housed Reliable Pictures).  He also worked on MANHUNT with Victor Jory and TIGHTROPE with Mike Connors (shot at the old Talisman Studios).  Filmwork included such features as ELMER GANTRY (United Artists, 1960) with Burt Lancaster and ALL THE YOUNG MEN (Columbia, 1960) with Alan Ladd.  Bob was at Universal as one of many young second assistants on SPARTACUS (Universal, 1960) with Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis.  After that, he worked at Ziv TV, including the early space adventure, MEN INTO SPACE with William Lundigan.  Bob recalls that his uncle Ira Webb was at Ziv at this time.  He then went to MGM and worked on COMBAT, SAM BENEDICT with Edmund O'Brien, FATHER OF THE BRIDE with Leon Ames, DOCTOR KILDARE with Richard Chamberlain, ELEVENTH HOUR with Wendell Corey, THE RICHARD BOONE ANTHOLOGY SERIES, MR. NOVAK with James Franciscus and Dean Jagger, THE LIEUTENANT with Gary Lockwood, and THE MAN FROM UNCLE and THE GIRL FROM UNCLE spy series.  Bob also was involved in some features including NAMU THE KILLER WHALE (United Artists, 1966), and proudly recalls working on director John Ford's last film, SEVEN WOMEN (MGM, 1966).  Patricia Neal was to star in this but had a stroke and was replaced by Ann Bancroft.

The Next Generation ...

Bob's son Mark Webb has directed underwater photography for the TV series BAYWATCH and currently serves as a producer and production manager. Bob's other son, Chris Webb is a property person in the film business.

Gordon's son, Gordon Webb, Jr., owns and operates Studio Air Conditioning Service in Calabassas.
